DREAM OCEAN – Entrevista con la vocalista Basak Ylva

Hemos tenido la oportunidad de entrevistar a una de las voces del momento dentro del metal sinfónico y no es otra que Basak Ylva, vocalista de DREAM OCEAN que recién acaban de editar un disco sensacional «The Missing Stone» y que ya puedes leer nuestra reseña sobre su nueva obra.

Hemos querido indagar un poco en sus inicios como cantante y en las entrañas del disco, para con ello conocer a la mujer detrás de la voz y además algunos entresijos de «The Missing Stone».

1. ¿De dónde viene tu gusto por el rock y el metal?
En mis primeros años de adolescencia comencé a escuchar música rock turca y luego descubrí a Alice Cooper y me enganché por completo. Así que solo quería encontrar bandas de metal y artistas de música rock similares. En el camino probé casi todo tipo de música metal y definitivamente no me gustaba el trash o el death metal, pero amaba algunas bandas melódicas de black metal y algunas de ellas tenían voces femeninas y de hecho me dirigieron al campo del metal sinfónico.

2. ¿Vienes de una familia con pasado musical? ¿De dónde surgió la idea de estudiar ópera? ¿Fue difícil ingresar al Conservatorio Estatal de la Universidad de Estambul?
Mis dos padres sabían cantar y tenían voces realmente extraordinarias. Mi padre cantaba en el coro de la radio nacional pero en música clásica tradicional turca. Y mi madre nos estaba cantando en casa unas terribles canciones populares turcas 😅😂 Nunca pude conectarme realmente con la música tradicional turca, pero mis padres me obligaron a cantar eso y chocamos mucho con mi amor y pasión por el rock  y el metal. Pero mi primer contacto con la música clásica fue a la edad de 10 años y escuché esta increíble flor famosa de la Ópera llamada «Lakmé», pero por supuesto no pude encontrar qué es esto porque en ese entonces no teníamos a Shazam 😅 😂 así que después de tantos años en la escuela secundaria, un novio mío me regaló un CD de música clásica que en realidad le robó a su jefe😅😂 y esa canción también estaba ahí. Pero en realidad mi idea de estudiar Ópera surgió gracias a Nightwish. Cuando busqué sobre Tarja Turunen, descubrí que ella estudiaba ópera y por eso cantaba tan increíble, así que tuve que aprenderlo también y tuve que estudiar ópera para eso. No fue difícil entrar al conservatorio, pero fue difícil convencer a mis padres que lo aceptaran, pero aún así lo hice. Y no recibí ninguna lección para prepararme para los exámenes. Solo recibí algunas notas de aria de un amigo violonchelista y las aprendí escuchando y luego entré a las audiciones y me llevaron.

3. El siguiente paso lógico en su crecimiento fue la Hochschule für Musik und Tanz de Colonia con un Máster en Música. ¿Fue difícil dejar su ciudad y mudarse a Alemania?

Fue difícil porque amo a mi país y me divierto mucho allí cada vez que estoy allí. Pero eso era necesario para mi carrera y ya estaba mucho tiempo del año en Alemania para cantar, así que moverme me facilitaría todo porque poco a poco estaba harto de volar y de solicitar visa cada vez.

4. Por mucho que la banda tenga referencias a bandas como Epica, Nightwish, Powerwolf, es notable que tengas tu propio estilo y sonido.

Sí, definitivamente tenemos nuestro propio estilo y lo sabemos y lo mantenemos lo más único posible. En realidad, ni siquiera tratamos de hacerlo único, simplemente sale así y estamos muy felices por eso, por supuesto, tenemos la influencia de estas bandas que nos gustan y escuchamos, pero definitivamente no copiamos su música porque lo son. todos tan únicos a su manera y ya están allí, así que tenemos que traer algo nuevo y eso es Dream Ocean.

5. ¿Qué diferencias encuentras entre tu debut «Lost Love Symphony» y este segundo álbum «The Missing Stone»?

«Lost Love Symphony» fue el producto de dos jóvenes que escribieron el álbum completo a principios de sus 20 y lo producen con la ayuda de otros grandes músicos y productores. Definitivamente es más ingenuo e inocente de una manera incluso sin experiencia, diría yo. Pero sigue siendo una producción increíble y un álbum muy profesional cuando piensas que es el primer álbum de una banda recién llegada y suena realmente increíble, estamos realmente orgullosos de él. Por otro lado, “The Missing Stone” es la producción de una banda trabajando en conjunto y todo fue hecho orgánicamente en nuestros estudios caseros solo por los miembros de la banda. The Missing Stone es definitivamente más oscura y más fuerte que Lost Love Symphony con sus melodías y su atmósfera siniestra.

6. ¿Podríamos decir que “The Mising Stone” es un disco más introspectivo?
Sí, podemos decir eso porque se trata de nuestro viaje en el mundo y psicológico como seres humanos.

7. Después de escucharlo, me pareció que no es un disco agresivo ni rápido, sino muy melódico y lleno de texturas únicas que hacen de escucharlo un momento único y especial. Que no sea agresivo, no quiere decir que no tenga fuerza, la tiene y mucha. Un álbum para descubrir sus secretos mientras lo escuchas repetidamente.

Sí, definitivamente es un álbum oscuro, pero definitivamente no es un álbum agresivo. Porque como miembros de Dream Ocean todos somos personas muy emocionales con pensamientos profundos y sabemos cómo dar un mensaje fuerte con melodías oscuras.

8. ¿Cuál fue el tema que más esfuerzo requirió a la hora de grabarlo? ¿Alguno en particular que sea tu favorito?

La grabación en general no fue un gran esfuerzo, todos hicieron un excelente trabajo. Pero, por supuesto, la orquestación requiere mucho trabajo, tiene que ser grande y poderosa, pero también dar suficiente espacio para la banda. Trabajamos mucho en la orquesta para sonar exactamente como queríamos.

Uno de los favoritos es probablemente el coro de «The Missing Stone». Nunca antes habíamos trabajado con coros y, de hecho, decidimos grabar coros ese mismo día, en el estudio a la carrera. Sebastian escribió las notas en 15 minutos y teníamos un amigo cantante con nosotros, así que de repente comenzamos a grabar un coro 😅😂Al final del día suena tan increíble que estamos motivados para tener más partes corales en nuestras futuras canciones.

9. Para mí es difícil elegir un tema favorito, cada tema del álbum te da sensaciones distintas, quizás uno de los puntos fuertes del álbum, por ejemplo; la delicada entrada de «Eternal Espera», las campanadas de «Daydreamer», la misteriosa «Song To The Ocean», la larga y enigmática «The Missing Stone» toda una declaración de intenciones en un brutal corte épico. ¿Quién lleva el peso creativo en la banda o es el trabajo de todos? ¿Cómo se construyen las canciones en DREAM OCEAN?

Escribimos las canciones principalmente con Sebastian. Algunas de las canciones completaban mis melodías en mis letras y, por supuesto, arregló todo el álbum e hizo las orquestaciones en la sala y Fred hizo las guitarras y creó los solos de guitarra y nos sorprendió mucho su lado creativo además de actuar. Y, por supuesto, algunas de las ideas de canciones vinieron de Sebastian. Puedo decir que construimos todos juntos y el peso se comparte por igual, pero tal vez Sebastian esté poniendo un poco más de énfasis en las canciones con arreglos orquestales que es algo que no podemos hacer.

10. ¿Cómo definirías «The Missing Stone» en pocas palabras?

Oscuro, emocional, siniestro

11. A nivel de grupo, el siguiente paso es salir a tocar en vivo ahora que las cosas con la pandemia parecen amainar y el 2022 parece un buen año para salir a la carretera, ¿cuáles son sus planes?

Sí, definitivamente nos mantenemos realistas y apuntamos a 2022. Debido a que la mayoría de los lugares de conciertos y festivales ya estaban reservados y están tratando de volver a reservar los conciertos que fueron cancelados, por lo que, como banda pequeña, desafortunadamente no tuvimos tantas oportunidades. Quiero decir que ya era difícil para una banda de principiantes y con el Covid todo ya está reservado para los próximos años y todo se puso aún más difícil.

12. Y a nivel personal, ¿qué te queda por estudiar, aprender o construir?

Todavía aprendo a cantar todos los días a pesar de que soy una profesional en el campo, pero sigo practicando regularmente y aprendo y tengo un entrenador vocal cada semana para mantener mis habilidades frescas. Además de eso, estaba aprendiendo a tocar el violonchelo, pero algo se interpuso y tuve que hacer una pausa, pero ahora tengo un violonchelo y me encantaría reiniciarlo de nuevo. Hablo un poco de italiano y realmente me gustaría mejorar eso y tal vez incluso aprender noruego o sueco.

1. Where does your taste for rock and metal come from?

In my early teenager years I started to listen to Turkish rock music and then I discovered Alice Cooper and I was totally hooked. So I just wanted to find similar metal bands and rock music artist. Along the way I tried almost every kind of metal music and I definitely didn’t like trash or death metal but I loved some melodic black metal bands and some of them had female vocals and they actually directed me into the symphonic metal field.

2. Do you come from a family with a musical past? Where did the idea of studying opera come from? Was it difficult to enter the State Conservatory of Istanbul University?

My both parents could sing and they had really extraordinary voices. My father was singing in the national radio choir but traditional Turkish classical music. And my mom was just singing at home to us some terrible Turkish folk songs 😅😂 I could never really connect with traditional Turkish music but my parents forced me to sing that in and we were clashing a lot with my love and passion for rock meta-music. But my first touch with classical music was at my age of 10 and I heard this amazing famous flower do it from the Opera called “Lakmé” but of course I couldn’t find what is this because back then we didn’t have Shazam 😅😂 so after so many years in high school a boyfriend of mine gifted me a classical music CD which he stole actually from his boss😅😂 and that song was also in there. But actually my idea for studying Opera came because of Nightwish. When I searched about Tarja Turunen, I found out that she studied opera and that’s why she was singing so amazing and so I had to learn it too and I had to study opera for that. It wasn’t hard to enter the conservatory but it was hard to convince my parents and dance they didn’t except it but I still did it. And I didn’t get any lessons to prepare myself for the exams. I only  got some aria notes from a cellist friend and I learned them by listening and then I entered to the auditions and they took me.

3. The next logical step in your growth was Cologne’s Hochschule für Musik und Tanz with a Master’s in Music. Was it difficult to leave your city and move to Germany?

It was Difficult because I love my country and I have a Lotta fun in there every time when I’m there. But that was necessary for my career and I was a lot of time of year already in Germany to sing so moving would make everything easier for me because slowly was sick of flying and Applying for visa each time.

4. As much as the band has references to bands like Epica, Nightwish, Powerwolf, it is remarkable that you have your own style and sound.

Yes we definitely have our own style and we are aware of it and we just keep it as unique as possible. Actually we don’t even try to make it unique it just comes out like that and we are very happy about it of course we have influence from these bands that we like and we listen but we definitely don’t copy their music because they are all so unique in their own way and they are already there so we have to bring something new and that’s Dream Ocean.

5. What differences do you find between your debut «Lost Love Symphony» and this second album “The Missing Stone”

“Lost Love Symphony” was the product of two young people who wrote the whole album during their early 20s and produce with the help of great other musicians and producers. It is definitely more naïve and innocent in a way even inexperienced I would say. But it still is an amazing production and a very professional album when you think that’s a first album of anew comer band and it sounds really amazing we’re really proud of it. In the other hand “The Missing Stone” is the production of a band working together and everything was done organically in our home studios only by the bandmeband members. The Missing Stone is definitely darker and stronger than Lost Love Symphony with it’s melodies and sinister atmosphere.

6. Could we say that “The Mising Stone” is a more introspective album?

Yes we can say that because it’s all about our in the world and psychological journey as human beings.

7. After listening to it, it seemed to me that it is not an aggressive or fast album, but rather very melodic and full of unique textures that make listening to it a unique and special moment. That he is not aggressive, does not mean that he does not have strength, he has it and a lot. An album to discover its secrets as you listen to it repeatedly.

Yes definitely it’s a dark album but it’s definitely not an aggressive album. Because as Dream Ocean members we all are very emotional people with deep thoughts and we know how to still give some strong message with dark melodies.

8. What was the subject that took the most effort when recording it? Any one in particular that is your favorite?

Recording in general was not a big effort, everybody did an excellent job. But of course the orchestration is a lot of work, it needs to be big and powerful but also gives enough space for the band. We worked a lot on the orchestra to sound exactly as we wanted it.

A favorite is probably the choir in „The Missing Stone“. We have never worked before with choirs and actually we decided to record choirs just on that day, in the studio on the run. Sebastian wrote the notes in 15 minutes and we had a make singer friend with us so we just started to record a choir all of a sudden 😅😂At the end of the day it sounds so amazing that we are motivated to have more choral parts in our future songs.

9. For me it is difficult to choose a favorite track, each song on the album gives you different feelings, perhaps one of the strengths of the album, for example; the delicate entry in «Eternal Espera», the chimes in «Daydreamer», the mysterious «Song To The Ocean», the long and enigmatic «The Missing Stone» all a declaration of intentions in a brutal epic cut. Who carries the creative weight in the band or is it everyone’s job? How are songs constructed in DREAM OCEAN?

We wrote the songs mostly with Sebastian. Some of the songs were completing my melodies in my lyrics and of course he arranged the whole album and he made the hall orchestrations and Fred did the guitars and he created the guitar solos and we were really amazed by his creative side besides performing. And of course some of the song ideas came from Sebastian. I can say we construct all together and the weight is shared equally but maybe Sebastian is putting a bit more forth into the songs with us orchestral arrangements which is some thing that we cannot do.

10. How would you define “The Missing Stone” in a few words

Dark, emotional, sinister

11. At the group level, the next step is to go out and play live now that things with the pandemic seem to subside and 2022 seems like a good year to hit the road, what are your plans?

Yes we just definitely stay realistic and aim for 2022. Because most of the concert places and festivals were already booked and they’re trying to rebook those concerts which were canceled so as a small band we didn’t have so many chances unfortunately. I mean it was already hurt for a beginner band and with corona everything is already booked for the next years and everything got even harder.

12. And on a personal level, what is left for you to study, learn or build?

I still learn how to sing every day even though I am a professional on the field but I still practice regularly and learn and have vocal coach every week to keep my skills fresh. Besides that I was learning cello playing but somethings came in between and I had to make a break but now I have a cello and I would love to restart that again. I speak a little Italian and I would really like to improve that and maybe even learn Norwegian or Swedish.
